Joe Meek was a pioneering English record producer, recording engineer, and songwriter of the 1960's. American audiences are familiar with two of Joe's productions: "Telstar" by the Tornados, and "Have I The Right" by The Honeycombs - but the story is much larger than these two hits.
After working several years at major English recording studios, Joe became restless producing and engineering for these established studios because of their standard methods of recording music. Joe wanted to experiment with sound and record production, so he left and set up a studio on his own and became one of England's first independent recording producers.
Working out of his flat in London, Joe produced hundreds of recordings, many of which he sold to major labels. These recordings were produced and engineered on his own terms. Those who worked with him testify that he was no ordinary man, that he experimented with recording techniques virtually all of the time.
One big innovation Joe is known for is the creative audio processing of individual instruments in order to create new sounds. In this respect, Joe Meek was way ahead of his time since his approach to recording has become a standard method of music production today.
Unfortunately, Joe Meek died in 1967 after struggling with personal issues.
Here then are sound clips from Joe Meek productions.
